What changes
An animated GIF becomes a single still picture, not a moving one. A GIF is already limited to 256 colours, so converting it to PNG does not add any back; the PNG is a lossless copy of what the GIF shows.

What happens to an animated GIF?
You get one still picture, not an animation. If you need the whole animation, keep the GIF.
