Etsy listing photo size: recommendations and export options

We exported the existing SizeSpec wallet demo image with the square and landscape Etsy presets. Compare the original with the exported JPEGs, then download the ZIPs to inspect their dimensions and file sizes.

Both exports enlarge the 1000 × 746 original. That changes the dimensions, not the amount of detail. Resizing keeps the original desk background. File sizes vary with the photo and browser.

What Etsy says

• TipAt least 2000 px wide and 2000 px tall.

Etsy accepts a square first photo, but its Help Center leans towards landscape and says to avoid square crops for thumbnails. For Etsy's preferred shape, use the landscape 4:3 preset.

Square or landscape for the first photo

Etsy's Help Center says the first listing photo should be landscape or square, and its thumbnail advice says to avoid square crops, because Etsy cuts square, portrait and landscape thumbnails from that photo. A square photo meets the size rule; a 4:3 landscape photo keeps more of the product in every crop. SizeSpec has a preset for each: this square one, and the Etsy landscape preset at 2667 x 2000.

File type and file size

• Etsy supports JPG, GIF, PNG, SVG and HEIC. WebP is not on the list, so convert WebP to JPG first.
• Animated GIFs and transparent PNGs are not supported. Transparent areas turn black.
• Images over 1 MB may not finish uploading on a slower connection. Aim for a JPEG under 1 MB.
• Etsy converts images to sRGB and compresses them, so a photo can look slightly less sharp after upload.

Do inches or DPI matter on Etsy?

No. Etsy states its sizes in pixels, and a screen shows pixels, so a photo's DPI or print size changes nothing in the listing. Check the pixel width and height in your phone's or computer's image details. To make the whole crop step easier, see how to crop photos for Etsy.
