To scale. The 600 px product page image keeps the shape of your upload, and is drawn square only because this photo is square. Themes and store owners can change the widths. From WooCommerce's documentation, checked 25 October 2026.

Why upload 800 x 800 or more

WooCommerce recommends uploading images at least 800 x 800 pixels. That size renders well as the single product image, the catalog image and the thumbnail, and larger images are better for products with fine detail. WooCommerce makes the display sizes for you, so you do not upload each size yourself.

Square, custom or uncropped

For catalog images, the store owner picks one of three cropping settings: 1:1 (square), custom (your own ratio), or uncropped, which keeps the shape of the image you uploaded. The single product image is always shown uncropped. You can change the widths and the cropping in Appearance > Customize > WooCommerce > Product Images.

When your theme sets the sizes

A theme can set its own image widths. When it does, the matching width controls in the Customizer are hidden and only the cropping setting is left. Block themes may hide the Customize menu, and you can open the Customizer at yourdomain.com/wp-admin/customize.php. WooCommerce also notes that after you change sizes you may need to regenerate your thumbnails so existing images use the new sizes.

Blurry or uneven images

WooCommerce says smaller images work, but they are a key sales tool, so use the highest quality you have. It points to a separate page on fixing blurry product images, and we have our own walkthrough: how to fix blurry WooCommerce product images. To give every product the same shape, see how to make WooCommerce product images the same size.

Starting with WooCommerce 11.1 you can add videos to a product gallery. The feature is experimental and off by default. WooCommerce says MP4 (H.264) plays in the widest range of browsers, the video has to be in your Media Library, and your hosting provider's upload size limit applies.
