Why 2048 x 2048

Shopify's Help Center says that for square product images, 2048 x 2048 pixels usually displays best. It is a recommendation, not a rule: Shopify accepts any size up to 5000 x 5000 pixels. When you add an image, Shopify creates smaller versions for the different places in your theme on its own, so a larger upload mostly costs page speed without showing more detail.

One shape for every main image

On collection pages, products sit side by side. Shopify notes that images of different shapes then display at different sizes, and asks for one consistent aspect ratio across featured images. Square is the simplest choice and matches the 2048 advice. A tall shape such as 4:5 works too, as long as every product uses it.

Getting a 2048 photo near 200 KB

Save photos as JPEG; PNG is far larger for photographs. Lower the JPEG quality a little before you shrink the picture, and stop if it starts to look blotchy, which Shopify itself warns about. SizeSpec's Shopify preset does this for a whole batch: it aims for 200 KB, shrinks gently but never below 1200 px, and tells you which file is still over. Is 2048 x 2048 required for Shopify product images?

No. Shopify says 2048 x 2048 usually displays best for square images, but any size up to 5000 x 5000 pixels and under 20 MB uploads.

What is the maximum image size on Shopify?

5000 x 5000 pixels, or 25 megapixels, and a file smaller than 20 MB.

Should Shopify product images be square?

They do not have to be, but every main image should share one aspect ratio so collection pages line up. Square is the easiest to keep consistent.

Does Shopify resize product images automatically?

Yes. When you add an image, Shopify creates different sizes for different areas of your theme, and serves the best format each browser supports.

Does Shopify crop or fit the photo?

Shopify photos are cropped to fill the full 2048 × 2048 px frame, with nothing added around the edges.
