How to make WooCommerce product images the same size

Updated · 2 min read

Short answer

WooCommerce crops catalog thumbnails to a square by default, and its thumbnail cropping setting offers 1:1, a custom aspect ratio or uncropped. For the cleanest result, crop all your originals to the same shape before you upload, so no setting has to guess.

What WooCommerce does by itself

  • The catalog thumbnail is 300 pixels wide and square cropped by default, so product grids look neat.
  • The gallery thumbnail is always square cropped, 100 x 100 pixels by default.
  • The main product image shows the full uploaded image and is uncropped by default. Photos of different shapes therefore give main images of different shapes.

The cropping options

  • 1:1: square cropping.
  • Custom: you enter your own aspect ratio.
  • Uncropped: keeps each image's own aspect ratio.

In a classic theme these settings are in Appearance > Customize > WooCommerce > Product Images. If your theme declares its own image widths, you cannot change the widths, but you can still change the cropping. After a change, publish it and regenerate your thumbnails (WooCommerce > Status > Tools > Regenerate shop thumbnails).

The most reliable way: crop your originals

  1. 01Pick one shape for the whole shop. A square is the simplest.
  2. 02Crop each product photo to that shape with the product centred and some space around it. See how to crop a photo to a square.
  3. 03Scale every photo to the same size, at least 800 x 800 pixels.
  4. 04Upload them. Thumbnails and main images now share one shape, whatever the theme does.

Do your whole catalog at once

SizeSpec's WooCommerce preset crops every photo to the same 800 x 800 square, or fits it on white if you do not want anything cut off, and gives you one ZIP. See the WooCommerce guide and how to crop multiple photos at once.

Frequently asked questions

Why are my WooCommerce thumbnails square when my photos are not?
Catalog thumbnails are square cropped by default. Change the thumbnail cropping to uncropped, or to a custom ratio, if your theme lets you.
How do I stop WooCommerce from cropping my images?
Choose the Uncropped option in the thumbnail cropping settings. If your theme sets the cropping itself, check its documentation.
Do I need to regenerate thumbnails after changing the cropping?
Yes. Publish the change, then regenerate the shop thumbnails so that older images update.

Selling online? Do a whole batch at once

SizeSpec crops and resizes a batch of product photos to the size WooCommerce asks for and gives you one ZIP. It crops from the centre or pads the image on white, and it works in your browser, so your files are never uploaded. It does not offer free-hand cropping of a single picture.
