How to fix blurry WooCommerce product images

Updated · 2 min read

Short answer

WooCommerce says blurry images are usually caused by theme styling that expects larger images than you uploaded, by originals that are too small, or by size settings that are too low. Check that the original is at least 800 x 800 pixels, set the main image width to at least the largest size your theme shows, then regenerate the shop thumbnails.

Why product images look blurry

  • Theme styling that sets image dimensions your uploaded images do not fit. WooCommerce says this is usually the cause.
  • Uploaded images that are too small.
  • WooCommerce image size settings that are too low.

Fix it step by step

  1. 01Open the Media Library and check the original size. For most themes it should be at least 800 x 800 pixels.
  2. 02If an original is smaller, delete it permanently, upload a larger version and set it again as the product image.
  3. 03Find the largest size your theme shows. WooCommerce suggests your browser's developer tools to read the rendered size of the catalog, product and thumbnail images.
  4. 04Go to Appearance > Customize > WooCommerce > Product Images and set the main image width to match or exceed that size. With a block theme, adjust the image dimensions in Appearance > Editor instead.
  5. 05Click Publish.
  6. 06Go to WooCommerce > Status > Tools and click Regenerate next to Regenerate shop thumbnails.

Previously uploaded images only update after you regenerate. WooCommerce says to do it after you activate a new theme, after you change image size settings and after you upload replacement images.

Sharper on high-resolution screens

WooCommerce suggests setting thumbnail sizes to double the size they are displayed at, so 80 x 80 becomes 160 x 160. Larger images can slow page loads, so it advises looking at your site analytics first.

Start with sharp originals

Enlarging a small picture cannot bring back detail, so the best fix is a good original. See does cropping reduce image quality. SizeSpec's WooCommerce preset prepares product photos at 800 x 800 pixels in one ZIP; it does not regenerate thumbnails in WordPress. See the WooCommerce guide.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to regenerate thumbnails in WooCommerce?
Yes, after you activate a new theme, change image size settings or upload replacement images. Use WooCommerce > Status > Tools > Regenerate shop thumbnails.
What is the minimum size for WooCommerce product images?
WooCommerce says at least 800 x 800 pixels for most themes. See best image size for WooCommerce.
Can I fix a blurry image by making it bigger?
No. Enlarging a small image cannot add detail. Replace it with a higher-resolution original.

Selling online? Do a whole batch at once

SizeSpec crops and resizes a batch of product photos to the size WooCommerce asks for and gives you one ZIP. It crops from the centre or pads the image on white, and it works in your browser, so your files are never uploaded. It does not offer free-hand cropping of a single picture.
