How to resize and crop screenshots for the App Store
Updated · 2 min read
Short answer
Pick the exact size Apple accepts for your device, crop or pad the screenshot to it, save it as a JPEG or a PNG without transparency, and check each file before you upload. A screenshot from a phone with a different shape has to be cropped or padded to match.
Before you resize
- Know the target: Apple lists accepted pixel sizes per device. The required iPhone class accepts 1179 x 2556 or 1206 x 2622, and a large iPhone accepts 1290 x 2796 among others. See App Store screenshot sizes.
- Know the rule: JPEG or PNG, and no transparency.
- Start from the biggest screenshot you have. Making a picture smaller keeps it sharp. Making it larger cannot add detail.
How to resize a screenshot
- 01Choose the target size from Apple's list.
- 02Decide how to deal with a different shape. Cropping to fill cuts away the edges, so check that no text or button is lost. Fitting on a coloured background keeps everything but adds bars.
- 03Scale the screenshot to the exact width and height.
- 04Save it as a JPEG, or as a PNG without an alpha channel.
- 05Check the pixel size of the result before you upload it.
Do a whole set at once
SizeSpec has App Store presets for the required iPhone class (1206 x 2622), the large iPhone class (1290 x 2796), iPhone Duo (1398 x 2034 and 2007 x 2853) and iPad (2064 x 2752). It crops to fill or fits on white, writes JPEG files, which have no transparency, and gives you one ZIP. It works in your browser, so your screenshots are never uploaded. It does not add device frames or captions. See the medium display guide, the large display guide and the iPad guide.
If your file has transparency
Convert it to JPG with the free PNG to JPG converter. Transparent areas become white.
Frequently asked questions
- Does the App Store accept JPEG screenshots?
- Yes. Apple accepts JPEG and PNG, as long as the image has no alpha channel or transparency.
- Will resizing make my screenshot blurry?
- Scaling a screenshot down keeps it sharp. Scaling it up cannot add detail, so start from the largest version you can capture.
- Should I crop or pad a screenshot with a different shape?
- Crop if only empty margin is lost. Pad if the whole screen must stay visible. Neither is as good as capturing the screenshot on a device with the right shape.

Publishing an app? Do the whole set at once
SizeSpec crops and resizes a batch of app screenshots to the size App Store asks for and gives you one ZIP. It crops from the centre or pads the image on white, and it works in your browser, so your files are never uploaded. It does not offer free-hand cropping of a single picture.
