How to crop multiple photos at once to the same size

Updated · 4 min read

Short answer

Phone and computer photo apps crop one picture at a time. To crop many photos to the same size, use a batch tool: an editor such as Photoshop with an action, or a browser tool that crops a whole folder to a set size and gives you a ZIP.

What the built-in apps can and cannot do

  • iPhone Photos, Google Photos, Windows Photos, Preview and Paint crop one picture at a time. See iPhone, Android, Windows and Mac.
  • Preview on a Mac can resize several selected pictures at once under Tools > Adjust Size, but cropping is still one picture at a time.

Batch cropping in an editor

Photoshop can record a crop as an action and run it on a folder with File > Automate > Batch. Lightroom and similar editors can apply the same settings to many photos. These give you full control, but they take some setup, and a recorded crop is the same for every picture, so it only suits photos that are framed alike.

Batch cropping for shop photos

If the goal is photos for Etsy, eBay, Amazon, Shopify or WooCommerce, SizeSpec crops a batch to the size each marketplace asks for and returns one ZIP. Everything runs in your browser, so the photos are never uploaded.

  1. 01Open the studio and pick the marketplace preset. Check its output width and height before adding photos.
  2. 02Add your original photos together. On the free plan, put up to five photos in this batch before exporting your one monthly pack.
  3. 03Under Framing, choose Crop to fill to trim the edges, or Fit on white to keep the whole photo and add white space.
  4. 04Select Export ZIP. Extract the download and inspect the JPEG files for clipped products, softness and unwanted white margins before uploading them to your marketplace.

SizeSpec crops from the centre of each photo and does not let you place the crop by hand for each picture. If a product sits off-centre, shoot it centred or crop it by hand first. The free plan has a monthly limit on packs and photos.

Crop to fill or fit on white?

  • Crop to fill

    What happens
The image fills the preset frame. Excess image area is cropped equally from opposite edges.
    Check before publishing
An off-centre product or an image with little space around it may be cut off.
  • Fit on white

    What happens
The complete image is centred inside the preset frame. Empty space is white.
    Check before publishing
The product may look too small. Existing backgrounds stay inside the photo; this is not background removal.
Both options use the selected preset dimensions. Framing controls what fits inside those dimensions.

What is in the ZIP?

A successful export contains the processed JPEG images at the selected preset dimensions. For example, the Amazon main image preset produces 2000 x 2000 images in sizespec-amazon-main.zip. This describes the output format, not a guarantee that the photos meet every marketplace rule. Read any export warnings and inspect the extracted files.

The free plan currently allows one pack of up to five photos per calendar month. Premium allows up to 200 photos per pack. A pack is one ZIP export, so collect the photos you need before starting. Photo processing runs in the browser, but usage checks require an internet connection.

Tips for photos that crop well in a batch

  • Shoot every photo at the same distance and with the product in the middle.
  • Leave space around the product, so a centred crop does not touch it.
  • Start from the largest originals, so the crops stay sharp. See does cropping reduce image quality.

It depends on the tool. Some upload your photos to a server. SizeSpec processes them in your browser. You can check any tool by opening your browser's network tab while it works.

Selling online? Do a whole batch at once

SizeSpec crops and resizes a batch of product photos to the size each marketplace asks for and gives you one ZIP. It crops from the centre or pads the image on white, and it works in your browser, so your files are never uploaded. It does not offer free-hand cropping of a single picture.
