How to reduce a photo to under 100 KB, 500 KB or 1 MB

Updated · 2 min read

Short answer

Save the photo as a JPG and lower the quality until the file fits. If that is not enough, make the picture smaller in pixels, which cuts the size much more than quality does. A browser tool can search for the highest quality that stays under your limit.

Two things set a photo's file size

  • Quality (compression). A JPG throws away detail the eye notices least. A lower quality setting throws away more, and the file shrinks.
  • Pixel size. A picture with half the width and half the height has a quarter of the pixels, so it is far smaller. Reducing the pixels is the strongest lever, and it is also the one you can see.

How to get under a limit

  1. 01Save or export the photo as a JPG. PNG files are much larger for photographs.
  2. 02Lower the quality in steps and check the size each time. Stop at the highest quality that fits.
  3. 03If the file is still too big at a quality you find acceptable, make the picture smaller. See crop vs resize.
  4. 04Look at the result at full size before you upload it.

Do it without the guessing

These free pages do the search for you in your browser: under 50 KB, 100 KB, 200 KB, 500 KB, 1 MB and 2 MB. Drop your photos, and each file shows its final size. Nothing is uploaded.

A very small limit on a large, detailed photo costs visible detail, and no tool can avoid that. Re-saving a photo in a browser tool also drops camera data such as the location tag. Keep your original.

Frequently asked questions

How do I reduce a photo to 100 KB?
Save it as a JPG and lower the quality until it fits, then make it smaller in pixels if it still does not. The free page for 100 KB does that search for you in your browser.
Does reducing the file size make a photo blurry?
A lower quality adds blocky or fuzzy areas, and fewer pixels make the picture look softer when it is shown large. The smaller the limit, the more you give up.
Is a KB 1,000 or 1,024 bytes?
It varies by program. Staying under the 1,000 byte count also stays under the 1,024 count, so it is the safe one.

Selling online? Do a whole batch at once

SizeSpec crops and resizes a batch of product photos to the size each marketplace asks for and gives you one ZIP. It crops from the centre or pads the image on white, and it works in your browser, so your files are never uploaded. It does not offer free-hand cropping of a single picture.
