How to compress product photos without visibly losing quality

Updated · 2 min read

Short answer

Resize each photo to the size it will be shown at, then compress it once at the highest quality that meets your limit, and check it at full size. Compressing twice, or saving a screenshot of a photo, loses quality that you cannot get back.

The order matters

  1. 01Resize first. A 6000 pixel photo shown at 2000 pixels carries pixels nobody sees. Cut it to the size you need. See crop vs resize.
  2. 02Compress once. Every time a JPG is saved again, it is compressed again. Start from the original and export once. See does cropping reduce image quality.
  3. 03Pick the highest quality that fits. Lower it only until you meet the limit. The last few steps of quality save the least size and show the most.
  4. 04Check at full size. Look at the edges of the product and at any text on the packaging.

Which format

  • JPG suits photographs and is accepted almost everywhere.
  • PNG keeps every pixel exactly but is much larger for photographs. Use it for logos and graphics with sharp edges. See PNG to JPG.
  • WebP is often smaller than a JPG at similar quality, but some upload forms do not accept it. See WebP to JPG.

Marketplaces state their own goals

Some marketplaces name a file size. Shopify suggests staying under 200 KB if you can, and Etsy warns that images over 1 MB may not finish uploading on a slow connection. See the Shopify image size guide and the Etsy photo size guide. SizeSpec applies each marketplace's size and file size goal to a whole batch and returns one ZIP.

Frequently asked questions

How do I make a product photo smaller without losing quality?
Resize it to the size it will be shown at, then export once at the highest JPG quality that meets your limit. Some loss is unavoidable with JPG, but it is small at high quality.
Is it better to lower the quality or the size?
Reduce the pixels to what you need first, then lower the quality only as far as the limit requires.
Can I compress a photo more than once?
You can, but each save adds loss. Always start again from the original file.

Selling online? Do a whole batch at once

SizeSpec crops and resizes a batch of product photos to the size each marketplace asks for and gives you one ZIP. It crops from the centre or pads the image on white, and it works in your browser, so your files are never uploaded. It does not offer free-hand cropping of a single picture.
