Google Play feature graphic: what it is and the size you need
Updated · 2 min read
Short answer
A feature graphic is the wide image Google asks for with your Google Play listing, and one is required to publish. It must be exactly 1024 x 500 pixels, in JPEG or 24-bit PNG format with no alpha channel.
What Google says
- Rule: exactly 1024 x 500 pixels.
- Rule: JPEG or 24-bit PNG, with no alpha.
- Rule: one feature graphic is required to publish.
- Not stated: the page gives no file size limit for it.
Do not mix it up with the app icon
The icon has its own rules on the same Google page: 512 x 512 pixels, a 32-bit PNG that may have alpha, and at most 1024 KB. The feature graphic is a different file with different rules.
How to make a picture 1024 x 500
- 01The shape is wide, a little over two to one. Start from a picture that is already wide, or keep the important part in the middle.
- 02Crop to the 1024 x 500 shape. Anything near the top and bottom edges is cut off when a taller picture is cropped.
- 03Scale to exactly 1024 x 500 pixels.
- 04Save as JPEG, or as a 24-bit PNG without alpha.
Crop to fill or pad?
Cropping keeps the middle of your image and removes the edges. Padding keeps everything but adds bars. For a banner, cropping usually looks better, as long as the subject sits in the middle.
Do it with SizeSpec
The Google Play feature graphic preset outputs 1024 x 500 JPEG files, which have no alpha. It works in your browser, so nothing is uploaded. See the feature graphic guide and the screenshot size article.

Publishing an app? Do the whole set at once
SizeSpec crops and resizes a batch of listing images to the size Google Play asks for and gives you one ZIP. It crops from the centre or pads the image on white, and it works in your browser, so your files are never uploaded. It does not offer free-hand cropping of a single picture.
