Pinterest Pin size: 2:3, 1000 x 1500 pixels and file limits
Updated · 2 min read
Short answer
Pinterest recommends a 2:3 shape, or 1000 x 1500 pixels, for image Pins. It accepts BMP, JPEG, PNG, TIFF and WEBP files, up to 20 MB when you upload on the web. Taller shapes may get cut off in people's feeds.
Pinterest's Pin specs page lists the file types and the 20 MB limit but no shape for image Pins. The 2:3 and 1000 x 1500 pixel figures come from its creative guidance for ads, which applies to standard image Pins.
The figures
- Shape and size: 2:3, or 1000 x 1500 pixels.
- File types: BMP, JPEG, PNG, TIFF or WEBP.
- File size: 20 MB maximum on the web. Pinterest lists 1 GB as the recommended limit on Android and iOS.
- Cut-off: larger aspect ratios, meaning taller shapes, may get cut off in feeds.
How to crop a Pin
- 01Start from a large original. A 1000 x 1500 pixel Pin is a small picture, so a larger photo gives you room to crop.
- 02Crop to 2:3 (portrait). See how to crop a photo to an aspect ratio.
- 03Keep the main subject and any text in the middle of the frame.
- 04Save as a JPEG or PNG and check the file size.
SizeSpec has a Pinterest preset: 1000 x 1500 pixels, cropped to fill. Figures and sources are in the Pinterest Pin size guide. To do a whole board's worth at once, see how to crop multiple photos at once.

Publishing an app? Do the whole set at once
SizeSpec crops and resizes a batch of Pin images to the size Pinterest asks for and gives you one ZIP. It crops from the centre or pads the image on white, and it works in your browser, so your files are never uploaded. It does not offer free-hand cropping of a single picture.
