How to crop a photo to an aspect ratio (4:3, 3:2, 16:9, 4:5 and more)

Updated · 4 min read

Short answer

An aspect ratio is width compared with height. To crop to one, keep the full height and cut the width to height x W / H if your photo is wider than the target, or keep the full width and cut the height to width x H / W if it is taller. Most editors have a ratio menu that does this for you.

What an aspect ratio is

An aspect ratio compares width to height. 4:3 means four parts wide for every three tall, so 1600 x 1200 and 4032 x 3024 pixels are both 4:3. The ratio sets the shape of the picture, not its size. Two photos can have the same ratio and very different pixel sizes.

The formula for any ratio

  1. 01Compare shapes. Divide your photo's width by its height, and the target's W by its H. A larger photo number means your photo is wider than the target.
  2. 02If your photo is wider, keep the full height and cut the width to height x W / H. A 6000 x 4000 photo cropped to 4:3 keeps all 4000 pixels of height and becomes 4000 x 4 / 3 = 5333 pixels wide.
  3. 03If your photo is taller, keep the full width and cut the height to width x H / W. A 4032 x 3024 photo cropped to 16:9 keeps all 4032 pixels of width and becomes 4032 x 9 / 16 = 2268 pixels tall.
  4. 04Move the frame so the subject stays inside, and crop.

A ratio is not a size

After you crop to a ratio, the picture may still be bigger or smaller than the pixels you need. Resize it next. The two steps together are in how to crop and resize a photo to a specific size in pixels.

Change the ratio without cutting anything

If nothing may be cut, scale the whole photo to fit a canvas of the new shape and fill the leftover space, for example with white. The square version of this is in how to crop a photo to a square. Some marketplaces ban added borders, so check the rules first.

Frequently asked questions

What does 4:3 mean?
Four parts wide for every three parts tall. 1600 x 1200 and 4032 x 3024 pixels are both 4:3.
What aspect ratio is my photo?
Divide its width by its height and compare. A 4032 x 3024 phone photo is 4:3, and a 6000 x 4000 camera photo is 3:2. Check your own file's pixel size, because cameras and phones differ.
How do I crop a photo to 16:9?
On a 4:3 photo, keep the full width and cut the height to width x 9 / 16. A 4032 x 3024 photo becomes 4032 x 2268, which removes 25% of the pixels.
How do I change the aspect ratio without cropping?
Fit the whole photo onto a canvas of the new shape and fill the empty space. Nothing is cut, but you add bars. See how to crop a photo to a square.
Is an aspect ratio the same as a size?
No. The ratio is the shape and the size is the pixel count. Crop to the ratio first, then resize.

Selling online? Do a whole batch at once

SizeSpec crops and resizes a batch of product photos to the size each marketplace asks for and gives you one ZIP. It crops from the centre or pads the image on white, and it works in your browser, so your files are never uploaded. It does not offer free-hand cropping of a single picture.
