Best image size for WooCommerce product photos
Updated · 2 min read
Short answer
WooCommerce recommends uploading product images of at least 800 x 800 pixels, and larger for products with fine detail. It then creates the sizes your store shows. By default that is a 600-pixel-wide main image, a 300-pixel square catalog thumbnail and a 100 x 100 gallery thumbnail.
What WooCommerce says
- Tip: upload images that are at least 800 x 800 pixels.
- Tip: larger images suit products with fine detail. Smaller images work, but should be the highest quality you have.
- How it works: WooCommerce generates the display sizes for you from the image you upload.
- Not stated: the pages we read give no file format or file size limit for images. Your hosting may have its own upload limit.
The three sizes WooCommerce makes
Single product image
- Used for
- The main image on the product page

Thumbnail

- Shop and category grids
- Default
- 300 px wide, square cropped
Gallery thumbnail
- Used for
- The small images below the main one
- Default
- 100 x 100 px, square cropped
| Size | Used for | Default |
|---|---|---|
| Single product image | The main image on the product page | 600 px wide, shown uncropped |
| Thumbnail | Shop and category grids | 300 px wide, square cropped |
| Gallery thumbnail | The small images below the main one | 100 x 100 px, square cropped |
Why themes matter
A theme can declare its own image widths. When it does, the store owner can't change the widths, but can still choose how thumbnails are cropped.
What to upload
Upload at least 800 x 800 pixels, and more if your theme shows images larger than that. If images still look soft, see how to fix blurry WooCommerce product images. To make shapes match, see how to make WooCommerce product images the same size.
Prepare a whole catalog
SizeSpec has a WooCommerce preset that outputs 800 x 800 pixel images, crops to fill by default and gives you one ZIP. 800 x 800 is WooCommerce's recommended minimum, so use a larger size if your products need more detail. See the WooCommerce product image guide.

Selling online? Do a whole batch at once
SizeSpec crops and resizes a batch of product photos to the size WooCommerce asks for and gives you one ZIP. It crops from the centre or pads the image on white, and it works in your browser, so your files are never uploaded. It does not offer free-hand cropping of a single picture.
