Updated · 2 min read
Short answer
Click the picture, open Picture Format, click Crop, drag the black handles, then click Crop again to finish. In Word and PowerPoint you can also pick an aspect ratio or Crop to Shape.
Crop a picture in Word or PowerPoint
- 01Click the picture. The Picture Format tab appears.
- 02Click Crop. Black handles show on the edges and corners.
- 03Drag a handle inward to cut away that side. Drag the picture itself to move it inside the frame.
- 04Click Crop again, or press Esc, to finish.
Crop to a fixed shape or ratio
Click the small arrow under Crop to open the menu. Aspect Ratio offers set shapes such as 1:1, 4:3 and 16:9. Fill and Fit resize the picture inside the frame, and Crop to Shape cuts the picture to an oval, rounded rectangle or other shape. For a circle, see how to crop a photo into a circle.
Make the file smaller after cropping
A cropped picture is still stored in full inside the document, only hidden. To remove the hidden parts, click the picture, choose Picture Format > Compress Pictures and tick Delete cropped areas of pictures.
Crop a picture in Google Docs and Slides
Click the picture, then click the Crop icon in the toolbar. Drag the black handles and press Enter to finish. In Google Slides, the arrow next to the crop icon (Mask image) lets you cut the picture to a shape.

SizeSpec crops and resizes a batch of product photos to the size each marketplace asks for and gives you one ZIP. It crops from the centre or pads the image on white, and it works in your browser, so your files are never uploaded. It does not offer free-hand cropping of a single picture.
