How to crop photos for Amazon: the main image rules
Updated · 3 min read
Short answer
Crop tight so the product fills 85 to 100 percent of the frame, on a pure white background (RGB 255, 255, 255), and make the longest side at least 1000 pixels so zoom works. Amazon's own sources recommend 1600 pixels or more.
What Amazon says about main images
- Rule: pure white background, RGB 255, 255, 255.
- Zoom threshold in the cited staff post: at least 1000 pixels on the longest side. This is a zoom threshold, not a complete statement of every image requirement.
- Tip: 1600 pixels or more is optimal.
- Rule: the product should fill 85 to 100 percent of the frame.
- Tip: JPEG preferred. PNG, TIFF and GIF are also accepted, at 72 dpi or more.
These figures come from an Amazon staff post on its Seller Forums, checked on October 28, 2026. Seller Central help and category-specific requirements may add conditions. Check the requirements for your category before uploading.
How to crop a photo for Amazon
- 01Start from a photo of the product on a white background, taken from a large original.
- 02Crop tight around the product so it fills at least 85 percent of the frame.
- 03Put the cropped product in the middle of a square canvas filled with pure white.
- 04Scale the canvas to at least 1000 pixels on the longest side. 2000 x 2000 satisfies the 1600 pixel tip.
- 05Check the background with an eyedropper or the info panel of your editor. It should read 255, 255, 255 everywhere.
A 2000 x 2000 file can still fail the checks
Product coverage
- Example problem
- A small product sits in the middle of a large white photo. Adding a 2000 x 2000 canvas does not make the product fill more of it.
- What to do
- Crop excess space from the original before exporting. Review coverage in the final file.
White background
- Example problem
- The original photo has a grey background, surrounded by white padding.
- What to do
- Use a photo with a genuinely white background or edit it separately. Check the original image area as well as the margins.
Sharpness
- Example problem
- A small original is enlarged to 2000 x 2000 and looks soft.
- What to do
- Start with a larger, sharp original. More output pixels do not restore missing detail.
| Check | Example problem | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Product coverage | A small product sits in the middle of a large white photo. Adding a 2000 x 2000 canvas does not make the product fill more of it. | Crop excess space from the original before exporting. Review coverage in the final file. |
| White background | The original photo has a grey background, surrounded by white padding. | Use a photo with a genuinely white background or edit it separately. Check the original image area as well as the margins. |
| Sharpness | A small original is enlarged to 2000 x 2000 and looks soft. | Start with a larger, sharp original. More output pixels do not restore missing detail. |
For example, a 1000 x 1000 photo placed inside a 2000 x 2000 export still needs a coverage and sharpness check. See does cropping reduce image quality before enlarging a small crop, or batch cropping when preparing several products.
What a tool can and cannot do for you
SizeSpec's Amazon preset places the whole photo on a pure white 2000 x 2000 canvas. It does not remove a background and it cannot check how much of the frame your product fills. So take the photo on white, crop tight first, and check the white yourself. See the Amazon main image guide for the full figures.

Selling online? Do a whole batch at once
SizeSpec crops and resizes a batch of product photos to the size Amazon asks for and gives you one ZIP. It crops from the centre or pads the image on white, and it works in your browser, so your files are never uploaded. It does not offer free-hand cropping of a single picture.
